2-door 4-seater saloon/estate car. The second generation Beetle, really, with the same basic floorpan, air-cooled engine layout, and underpinning, but with more anonymous styling. The saloon was a fastback, and the capacious estate 'Variant' was a good seller. Had front discs, and 65bhp at first.

The renamed 1600 Karmann Ghia's 66-hp at 4,600 RPM was enough to push the car to a top speed--also cruising speed, as VW always noted--of 90 MPH, a good 8 MPH better than the Type 1 Ghia. And as in other Type 3s, the Type 34's four-speed manual could be replaced with a fully automatic three-speed.

The VW Type 3 engine received a larger displacement (1.6 L) for 1966 (August '65) and in 1968 became the world's first volume production car to feature electronic fuel injection - pioneered by Bosch. The Bosch D-Jetronic system was offered on the Volkswagen 1600 TE & LE version (E designating "Einspritzung" or "injection" in German).

Reaction to it largely depended on one's relationship to the Beetle: for those that thought of the Beetle as a slow poor-man's Porsche 356 (and.

Paul Niedermeyer - Posted on June 16, 2021 It took some five years for the VW Type 3 (1500/1600) to make it to America, at least officially. Why? The 1500 was badly needed for VW to stay competitive in its home markets, but was selling every Beetle in could make in the US.

While sometimes referred to as the 1500/1600 Karmann Ghia Coupe, it was better known as the Type 34. With raised fender lines, a tall and more upright greenhouse and longer overhangs, the new Karmann Ghia looked ready to be Volkswagen's new flagship model for 1961. 1961 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia 1500 Coupe (Type 34)

France was a pioneer in the automotive industry and is the 11th-largest automobile manufacturer in the world by 2015 unit production and the third-largest in Europe (after Germany and Spain). It had consistently been the 4th-largest from the end of World War II up to 2000. It is 16% of sales of French manufactured products. France is home to two major automaking companies:

The Fastback, or TL version, a fastback coupé, arrived in August 1965, along with the 1600 engine. Volkswagen's intention was that this model should replace the Notchback, which is what happened in the UK market.

In contrast, Volkswagen built 21,529,464 Type 1 Beetles between 1938 and 2003 at plants around the world. The Type 3 wasn't a failure, but it wasn't the overwhelming success that VW needed to.

This car is a Volkswagon of Brasil built type 3 that was designed by Marcio Piancastelli and it was given the nickname of Zé do Caixão ("Coffin Joe") because of its boxy shape. This 1969 Volkswagen 1600L failed to meet reserve at a bid of $9800 (but will probably be back up for sale soon) located in Daytona Beach, FL. From the seller:

When the Type 3s where finally imported by VW, that premium dropped substantially: this 1969 listed at $2295, vs. $1799 for a '69 Beetle. I happen to have an April 1964 Car and Driver in my lap, which devotes the bulk of the issue analyzing why VW wasn't importing the Type 3, and the ins and outs of gray imports.

A 12-volt electrical system was new in 1967. The 1600-cc engine was enhanced with standard electronic fuel injection (a world first in a mass-produced economy car!) in U.S. models for 1968. The original swing axle rear suspension was replaced with independent semi-trailing arms across the line in 1969, and an automatic transmission became optional.
